POS 09 Laughlin: Just Add Water—Life on the Colorado

October 9-11

Laughlin: Life on the ColoradoOnly 90 minutes southeast of Las Vegas, Laughlin is a recreational center with its own story to tell. Located where California, Nevada and Arizona meet, it’s an old mining site that came back to life as a casino resort on the Colorado River, which adds a bundle of water sports to the getaway playground. We will explore the mining history and have a choice of outdoor adventures.

On the way from Vegas, the first stop is the historical Techatticup Mine at El Dorado Canyon. A guided above- and below-ground tour will share the history of the oldest and most famous gold mine in southern Nevada, including the Savage Mine. If you think the historic buildings here look familiar, you’ve likely seen them in movies. After lunch in Laughlin at Bumbleberry Flats, we’re off on a leisurely, narrated riverboat cruise on the Colorado River. There will be some free time after checking into our host hotel and before dining at one of Laughlin’s gourmet restaurants. Day two brings a choice of excursions:

Option 1: The London Bridge Jet Boat Tour departs Laughlin mid-morning traveling on Colorado River through scenic Topock Gorge to Lake Havasu City, AZ. There will be time to visit London Bridge, explore the harbor and shops and have lunch. The jet boat accommodates up to 38 people and travels at speeds of 40 mph. We will return via motor coach through Oatman, AZ, on old Route 66, a gold mining town with buildings on the National Register. Resident feral burros wander the streets as unofficial ambassadors.

Option 2: The three-hour kayak/canoe excursion is an exploration of urban and undeveloped land following the Colorado River Heritage Trail. It begins at historic Davis Camp and winds past Laughlin’s casino row. It’s a leisurely paddle past the residential area of Bullhead City, on the Arizona side of the river, and the Laughlin Lagoon area, where it is common to spot waterfowl and other wildlife. Afterward we have lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at the Golden Nugget Laughlin.

Option 3: A guided horseback ride along the Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trails. The 10½-mile trail system is a combination of equestrian, pedestrian and bicycling paths, which parallel the river and traverse the desert. Your experienced wrangler will show you spectacular views of Lake Mohave, Davis Dam and the Laughlin casinos. We eat lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at the Golden Nugget Laughlin.

We’ll wrap up the day with dinner at Guy Fieri’s El Burro Borracho and live entertainment. Our trip concludes with a Sunday Champagne Brunch at the Windows on the River Buffet at the Aquarius Casino Resort and return to the Las Vegas airport.
